Peach Picking in South Carolina: 10 U-Pick Farms To Visit

The region of the United States commonly referred to as the South is renowned for its delectable peaches. However, the experience of hand-selecting them adds an extra level of satisfaction to their deliciousness.

In South Carolina, peaches will ripen from May through August depending on the variety. Seasonal ripening also heavily depends on the weather and may be affected by drought, heavy rain, or longer-than-usual cold spells.

Picking peaches is easy and fun! Go on a nice evening or go during the weekend, but it is always wise to call the farm ahead to ensure they are offering U-Pick and that there are still some peaches available.

Going first thing in the morning is the best way to ensure that you get your spot in the orchard and to beat the heat!

Pick peaches that have decent color and fall off easily into your hand. If you need to pull the peach, it is probably not ready, and you will end up damaging the fruit before you get it off the tree!

It may be best to cut the fruit from the tree to get it off without damaging it. Just be sure to ask if it’s alright to use clippers in the orchard.

Be sure to go prepared — these are working orchards, and there are uneven surfaces you will need to walk on and tall branches to reach.

Closed-toed shoes are best, and bring a hat or sunscreen because there isn’t much shade in the orchard. Most farms provide their own baskets, so there is no need to bring your own.

With these tips and a beautiful summer day, you’ll have a lovely time picking peaches!
